RIDGEFIELD -- The gym at echoed with the sounds of bouncing basketballs and squeaking sneakers on Saturday, and you can be sure that Tyler Ugolyn was looking on with a smile on his face.
It's been almost 10 years since Tyler was killed in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. A recent graduate, he was working as a research associate for Fred Alger Management on the 93rd floor of the North Tower of the in New York. He was just 23 years old when he died.
But his spirit lives on, and Saturday's 3-on-3 basketball tournament at Ridgefield High -- The Tyler Ugolyn Memorial Basketball Tournament (Ty's Tourney, for short) -- was a celebration of that spirit.
More than 30 teams participated in the event, which raised money for the , an organization founded in Tyler's honor that promotes youth basketball programs and refurbishes inner-city basketball courts.
Among Tyler's family members who were in attendance were his parents, Victor and Diane, and his younger brother, Trevor.
"It's emotional, but on a positive front," said Trevor, who is 3 1/2 years younger that Tyler. "It's wonderful to see that, close to 10 years later, giuseppe zanotti shoes, everyone still has his memory and love (in their hearts). The opportunity to bring everyone together, that's something he's always had the ability to do. Ten years later, his spirit has lived on. It shows how many lives he touched and friendships he brought together. It's fantastic to see that people would actually take time out on a gorgeous Saturday in July to come out here and play basketball out of love for the community."
One of the event organizers, furla candy bag, -- who graduated from Ridgefield High in 1996, one year ahead of Tyler -- said the event raised more than $12,000 for the Tyler Ugolyn Foundation. In a way, the foundation is simply following the kind, generous example Tyler set. While he was at Columbia, he started and ran a basketball program for kids in Harlem, and donated his time to serve meals at a soup kitchen.
"I'm overwhelmed by the support and generocity of everyone who has come together," Martin said, pointing out the many people who hopped on flights from all over the country and traveled great distances to be a part of the event.
The big turnout for the event was a reflection of the many lives Tyler touched.
"It's just a wonderful testament to the love and friendship Tyler had for his friends, and the love and friendship they had for him," Victor said. "Friendship is life-long and forever."
Some of the teams at Ty's Tourney were made up of his old high school friends and teammates. Others included players and coaches from Columbia University. Some were made up of players who followed in Tyler's footsteps at Ridgefield High.
"It's hard to believe it's been 10 years, giuseppe zanotti outlet, but at the same time it feels like it was just yesterday, giuseppe zanotti sandals," said , one of Tyler's classmates, teammates and friends. "The turnout, with this many people coming, cheap giuseppe zanotti, it's just a sign of how amazing of a person Tyler was."
In addition to being one of Tyler's close friends, Elliott was also his basketball teammate from fifth grade through high school. They graduated from Ridgefield High together in 1997. Elliott is one of several people who have Tyler's number 34 -- the number he wore both at Ridgefield and Columbia -- tattooed on their arms.
"He was great. Everybody loved him," Elliott said. "He was selfless, giuseppe zanotti sandals, one of the nicest people you'll ever meet."
The number 34 has great significance for the Ridgefield basketball team. In Tyler's memory, the number 34 is worn each season by the player who best exemplifies the qualities that Tyler embodied.
The most recent player to wear the number, giuseppe zanotti outlet, 2011 Ridgefield graduate ,giuseppe zanotti sale, was one of the tournament's organizers.
"It's a great honor to represent Tyler, furla tote," said Galvin, who will continue his studies at this fall. "It's just a tragedy that we lost him. It's a great honor to represent him and his family."
